There was once a young man who rang the bell in a school. That was his only means of livelihood as he was totally unlettered and could not even sign his name. Came a circular from the school authorities ordering the dismissal of all people employed in school who couldn’t read and write. So the poor fellow lost his job as a bell – ringer. He opened a small stall to sell rice noodle soup near the school. It prospered. He opened a second, a third, and a fourth till he had a chain of noodle soup stalls across the city. He became a rich man. One day the school Headmaster came to ask for donation to repair the school. He generously donated ten million kips. The Headmaster put a subscription voucher with the figure of ten million kips and asked him to sign it. He replied ” If I could have signed my name, I would still have been ringing the school bell “
